Ingredients:
For the Crust:
- 2 1/4 cup all-purpose flour.
- One teaspoon of salt.
- Cut 1 cup cold unsalted butter into tiny cubes.
- 1/4 cup icy water.
For the Filling:
- 6-8 medium-sized apples peeled and sliced (about 6 cups)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar.
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour.
- One teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg.
- 1/4 teaspoon salt.
- 1/4 cup butter, chopped into small pieces (about 1/2 stick)
Instructions:
Make the Crust:
1. In a large mixing basin, combine the flour and salt.
2. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, knead the cubed butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
3. Gradually add ice water and whisk with a fork until the dough forms a ball.
4. Divide the dough in half, shape it into disks, and wrap them in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least an hour.
Make the Filling:
1. In a separate large basin, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until the apples are evenly covered.
2. Set aside.
Assemble and Bake the Pie:
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190° C).
2. On a gently floured board, roll out one cold dough disk to a thickness of 1/8 inch.
3. Transfer the dough to a 9-inch pie plate, trimming the edges to suit.
4. Fill the pie crust with the apple mixture and garnish with butter bits.
5. Roll out the second dough disk to a thickness of approximately 1/8 inch. Use this as a lid.
6. Crimp the edges to seal the pie, and make a few vents in the top crust to let steam out.
7. To create a golden glaze, brush the top crust with a little milk or beaten egg.
8. Bake for 40-50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the apples
